A Life of Darkness || Stefan & Caroline

The shock on Caroline’s features never diminished, even when Stefan told her to get lost. Those words shouldn’t hurt her, shouldn’t make her like she’d lost a part of herself, but they did. She’d heard tales of how bad it was when someone flipped the switch, that they weren’t the same person anymore, and now standing in front of the person who had been her best friend, watching him feeding on a helpless girl, she finally understood just how terrible it was. Even though she was good at losing people, it didn’t mean it got easier, in fact it just got harder. Most people didn’t know how much she had valued Stefan’s friendship, how much he’d meant to her, and now she regretted that. Telling him now wouldn’t do any good. He wasn’t the Stefan she knew anymore.
Caroline had known it was going to be difficult for her to see him this way, but she had never imagined it to be this painful. It was like a part of herself had died, as if everything he had taught her about staying true to who she was, who she had been before being turned, had never happened. That alone was enough to almost send her over the edge again. Almost. Her common sense reeled her back in though. Stefan needed a friend right now, someone to show him that just because he’d taken a couple of steps backward, it didn’t mean that he wasn’t able to go forward. He’d been that friend for her and now it was her turn. Silly as it was Caroline felt an obligation to Stefan, felt responsible for him. No way was she Lexi but she had to try to help him. How could she leave him like this after the things he’d done for her? There was no way. It seemed like everyone had given up on Stefan with her being the only exception. Now standing in front of him she had to struggle to remember that before she’d had hope.
Her stomach turned as she stood there watching him feed and fear began to make it’s presence known inside of her. What was she afraid of though? The answer came to as her blue eyes found Stefan’s face. Him. She was afraid of him. A sob started to build up in her throat which she tried to disguise as a cough and that was when it hit her. An idea that might help Stefan see just how much she truly needed him. Dropping the act, Caroline let her tears flow freely. “I can’t just go away, Stefan. I miss you… Let her go and I’ll get you some blood bags.” Everything seemed to be pouring out of her now. All the sadness, all the pain that had come after her losing him. “Please…come talk to me.”
Ever since Klaus released Stefan from his compulsion, Stefan had begun to distance himself from his own humanity. His freedom was restored and yet he had chosen a life of darkness. There was no room in his life for things such as remorse or love, so he blocked those out in order to avoid the pain. As a result, Stefan had become pretty much nothing less than a monster. And now for the first time, Caroline was here to experience this first hand. The old Stefan had never wanted Caroline to see this side of him. He wanted her to learn from his tales of the past, to avoid having similar things happen to her. But, Caroline seemed to have a better hold on her humanity than most and Stefan was once again a soulless killer.
The brunette had long since gone limp in his arms and Stefan was no longer in any mood to finish his meal. The girl was still alive, but just barely. He traced his tongue along his teeth, tasting the remaining blood and watched Caroline carefully. It had already become clear to him that there was only one reason for her to be here. Clearly she had some sort of intention to bring him back to his normal self, but there was no chance of her succeeding. Stefan Salvatore had flipped the switch for good this time and there was no going back.
Stefan raised an eyebrow, curiously and watched as Caroline seemed to have some sort of break down. Tears appeared and all he could do was roll his eyes, as a uninterested look glazed over his face. “Let her go? Blood bags? Are you even listening to yourself?” A cold laugh escaped his lips, as he shook his head in disbelief. “I don’t want anything to do with you and your blood bags, Caroline. I prefer my blood warm and straight from the source, just as it was always meant to be.” The girl in his arm let out a small whimper and Stefan became annoyed. “If you think you can just come down here, shed a few tears and everything would go back to normal, than you have no idea what’s going on.” He chuckled again, as his eyes met hers. “I don’t care about anything anymore, Caroline. And you certainly aren’t going to change that.” As if to prove his point, Stefan placed a hand on either side of the brunette’s head and snapped her neck. The girl dropped, her body smacking against the pavement, dead.
